Does anyone have any advice for troubleshooting an Int. Comfort Products heat kit, M# EKH20AKB2?

My electric bill has skyrocketed since I started having to run my heater.... more that twice the amount it is when I run my A.C. I have 2 new central units in the house I bought several months ago, and I worked HVAC for a short period. The heater kit in my downstairs unit was field installed apparently, and I am wondering what all I can test on it, and how to test it for using excess power. It isn't tripping the breakers or anything, but something has to be going wrong somewhere. I went from using around 2000 kwh per month, to using over 5000..... somebody please help me out.

I recommend using an Amprobe. This device reads the magnetic field generated when current flows thru a wire. If your heater is 220VAC, as I'm sure it is, there will be 2 hot wires feeding it. Clamp the probe around one wire at a time with the heater running wide open. Write down your amp values for each wire. Find the KW or watt rating on the heater nameplate. Take nameplate watts, divide by 220 or 240 depending on your voltage. This will give you the amps that the heater is supposed to use. Compare with what you wrote down. I have seen heater contactors stuck in the closed position . Its rare, but if that happens, the heater will stay on even if your Tstat is not calling for heat and the air handler is not running. Just remember that electric heat is the most costly heat source out there.
