Opal Sock Yarn
What else can be knit with sock yarn?

I'm a novice knitter really keen on buying the new Harry Potter yarn from Opal brand knits (a sock yarn company), but I know socks can be a bit tough to knit. So is there any other projects that respond well to sock yarn? Something easy-medium in difficulty. Mittens, hats, anything. I was really hoping to do a scarf with it (because of the neat ombre) but I'm not sure sock yarn lends itself to that kind of knit.

Advice/ideas appreciated!

Opal harry potter sock yarn is a 4 ply yarn, so you can knit any pattern with it that suits a 4 ply. I wouldn't go for anything too big, as money can be an object. Scarves are possible with any gauge. You could just cast on 100 stitches or so and knit every row for a garter stitch scarf.

You may know this already...but you said "novice"....you can't knit a stockingnet stitch scarf. Stockingnet stitch curls onto itself, and standing alone, it won't do as a scarf.

Here's a pretty basic pattern. It has some "stitchwork", but nothing too fancy. My first foray into "lacy" knitting was with the chevron pattern. It's fairly easy.

Here's a nice rib stitch scarf made by using two strands of 4 ply held together:

If you fancy perhaps something larger, there's this Tee-shirt:

For the best info on all things knitting, I would suggest www.ravelry.com . You have to sign up, and wait for approval (generally 2 days or less), but it has really cool pattern browsers, which is how I found these patterns in a hurry, and they are just the tip of the iceberg. Also, great knitting forums with literally thousands of helpful knitters who will be happy to answer your questions.

Have fun and happy knitting!
